Düsseldorf Airport expects 2 million Dutch passengers
Düsseldorf Airport sees a sharp increase in the number of Dutch passengers, partly due to the tripling of the Dutch flight tax and image damage to Schiphol. The share of Dutch passengers rises from less than 5 per cent before the corona crisis to 8 to 10 per cent in 2023, representing almost two million Dutch passengers. This year, the airport expects to welcome 20 million passengers, which is four million more than last year.
Holiday destinations
Popular destinations from the airport include Antalya and Palma de Mallorca, with more than 115 departing flights per week. There are also new airlines flying from Düsseldorf this year, including Volotea to Bordeaux, FlyOne Armenia to Yerevan, Nouvelair to Monastir and Tunis, and PLAY Airlines from Iceland to Reykjavik. Outside Europe, the offer also increases with Delta Air Lines returning and connecting Düsseldorf to Atlanta, Royal Jordanian starting the Düsseldorf-Amman route in September and Etihad Airways connecting the airport to Abu Dhabi from October.
Düsseldorf Airport is an hour’s drive from the Dutch border and Airport Weeze, just two kilometres from the border, is also seeing an increase in Dutch travellers. Dutch tour operator Sunweb recently started flights from Weeze to Greece, operated by Sky Express. More Dutch people are also expected at Belgian airports because flights within Europe are less heavily taxed than in the Netherlands.
Although Düsseldorf Airport is seeing an increase in the number of Dutch travellers, a strike went on Friday, leading to massive flight cancellations.
