Lufthansa takes old Boeing 747-400 aircraft back into service

Lufthansa has put a number of old Boeing 747-400 aircraft back into service. These aircraft had been placed in storage during the start of the COVID crisis. Due to the recovery of aviation Lufthansa has decided to put these aircraft back into service.

Full recovery

Lufthansa expects full aviation recovery by September and wants to be able to fly at maximum capacity by then. A Lufthansa spokesperson confirmed this to the German website Airliners.de. Few details are released but the plan is to put these aircraft into service after the summer.

8 Boeing 747-400 aircraft

Lufthansa currently has 8 Boeing 747-400 aircraft in storage. Of these, at least 3 will be taken out of storage. Lufthansa has already started to inspect these aircraft. The Boeing 747-400 aircraft are now 20 years old and will be used for several years. Lufthansa is using these aircraft to bridge the period until the new Boeing 777-9 aircraft enter service. This is scheduled for 2024.

Airbus A340-600

Besides the Boeing 747-400, Lufthansa will also put the Airbus A340-600 back into service. With this type of aircraft Lufthansa can offer First Class flights to destinations from Munich. The Airbus A340-600 will eventually be replaced by the Airbus A350.
