Norwegian retains 600 staff after further layoffs
Norwegian has to lay off staff again in order to survive. It was announced this week that the Norwegian Government will no longer grant state aid to Norwegian. This came quite unexpectedly and had not been counted on by Norwegian. A total of 600 people will remain in Norwegian employment. Before the COVID-19 crisis, there were more than 10 000 employees.
Smaller fleet and network
Norwegian CEO Jacob Schram spoke of a great disappointment. On the day that it became known that the Norwegian government would not grant state aid, Jacob Schram immediately announced another round of dismissals. A total of 1,600 people will lose their jobs.
The Norwegian fleet will also be reduced. Of the 16 aircraft still flying, 6 will continue to fly. There is no other choice for Norwegian at the moment. The Boeing 737-800 will continue to fly. Flights will only continue within Norway from home base Oslo Airport. A total of 13 destinations will be flown in.
Bankruptcy
Bankruptcy seems inevitable, yet Jacob Schram will do everything he can to keep Norwegian alive. With the recent news of a possible COVID-19 vaccine, there may still be a glimmer of hope for Norwegian.
