General information Ponta Delgada Airport

Ponta Delgada Airport is located on the island of Sao Miguel, one of the Portuguese archipelago Azores. The airport is about two kilometres from the city of Ponta Delgada. The airport is the most important airport of the Azores. The airport is also known as the Joao Paulo II Airport in honour of Pope John Paul. The airport exists since 1969 and the new airport building dates back to 1995. Approximately one million people travel through this airport every year.

Airlines and destinations

Most flights to and from the Azores are operated by Azores Airlines and SATA airlines. There are also a few flights a day from TAP and price-fighter Ryanair. Most flights are between Ponta Delgada Airport and mainland Portugal or the other Portuguese islands. Both TAP and Azores Airlines and Ryanair operate multiple daily flights between Lisbon and Ponta Delgada and fly to Porto several times a week. Popular destinations from this airport are the other islands of the Azores, Terceira Island, Horta, Santa Maria and Pico Island.

From the island of Sao Miguel you can also reach the mainland of North America. There are a number of weekly flights to Boston in the US and to Toronto in Canada. You can fly with TAP or Azores Airlines. Europe is connected to Ponta Delgada Airport via Frankfurt as well as via Portugal. During the high season there are several flights between different European destinations and this island of the Azores, for example London and Geneva.

Accessibility

Ponta Delgada Airport is located a short distance from the city of Ponta Delgada. The airport is located along the EN1-1A road that runs around the entire island. There is also a shuttle bus that runs between the airport and the main points of Ponta Delgada. The bus is available daily from 5 a.m. to midnight and runs every hour. Tickets can be bought at the kiosk at the airport or directly on the bus. A single ticket costs 4,50€, a return ticket 6,50€. Children pay less. Of course it is also possible to take a taxi or rent a car.

Ponta Delgada Airport Parking

There are two car parks at Ponta Delgada Airport. P1 is for short term parking and P2 is for longer term parking. At P1 you pay 0,80€ per quarter of an hour. A day ticket costs 18,50€. If you park longer than one day, you pay € 6,00 per day. On P2 parking costs €0.70 per quarter of an hour. A day ticket costs €12. If you park longer than one day, a day ticket costs only €3.00. Do you just want to drop someone off or pick them up? P1 has the possibility to park for free for 10 minutes. You can park ten minutes free of charge a maximum of twice in 24 hours.

Ponta Delgada Airport is not large, but all the facilities a traveller needs are available. Considering the size of the island, there are relatively many flights departing from this airport. This is an advantage for the tourists who want to visit the island, but also for the inhabitants of the island who can travel so easily. Another advantage is the extremely cheap parking fee. The only disadvantage is the very limited public transport possibilities.
